Iridium's Next‑Generation Hybrid IoT Module and Development Kit are Now Commercially Available
Iridium Communications Inc. has announced the commercial availability of the Iridium 9604 module and Development Kit, designed to expedite the development of global Internet of Things (IoT) solutions. This integrated offering enhances connectivity by combining Iridium Short Burst Data (SBD) satellite, LTE-M cellular, and GNSS positioning, which allows developers, OEMs, and solution providers to build and scale their IoT applications more rapidly.
The Iridium 9604 module is built on the u-blox SARA-R5 platform, which aims to reduce hardware complexity and integration costs while accelerating the time to market. This compact design significantly decreases board space requirements and simplifies RF routing, power architecture, and firmware development.
Tim Last, executive vice president of Iridium, noted that the launch represents a critical advancement in global IoT connectivity. "By replacing three separate components with one integrated solution, developers can simplify device design, reduce costs, and create smarter, location-aware products," he said. Early developers have reported operational and economic advantages stemming from the module’s integrated structure.
Askar Gabit, CEO of GPSOne, highlighted the benefits of the Iridium 9604 in developing a global asset tracking solution that does not depend on terrestrial networks. He emphasized its reliable coverage and compact form factor as factors that have expedited their development process. The module allows independent control over satellite and cellular subsystems, facilitating flexible connectivity strategies.
The Iridium 9604 is designed for scalable and power-sensitive applications, featuring a compact size of 16 mm x 26 mm x 2.4 mm. It supports various GNSS services as well as Iridium's global satellite network, ensuring connectivity in remote areas where other networks may be unreliable. The module is a key component of Iridium’s evolving IoT strategy, which now offers multiple connectivity options for diverse applications.
