DoH and MIT- Koch Institute Partner to Advance AI-Driven Cancer Research
The Department of Health – Abu Dhabi (DoH) has announced a strategic collaboration with the MIT – Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research aimed at advancing AI-enabled oncology research, translational science, and bioconvergence innovation. This partnership is designed to leverage Abu Dhabi's intelligent life science ecosystem by connecting research expertise with the necessary infrastructure, talent, and capabilities to translate scientific discoveries into real-world applications.
This collaboration aligns with the UAE's National Cancer Strategy and MIT's emphasis on research excellence. The initiative focuses on breakthrough cancer research, particularly concerning climate-health and population-specific oncology challenges. It aims to develop and implement large-scale, multi-institutional clinical trials and translational research studies, participate in MIT's Bioconvergence Cancer Alliance, and establish shared research databases and biobanks for population-specific cancer research.
H.E. Dr. Noura Khamis Al Ghaithi, Undersecretary of the DoH, stated that the collaboration is focused on creating a sustainable ecosystem that fosters knowledge sharing, scientific discovery, and applied innovation. She emphasized the partnership's goal of advancing cancer research, developing talent, and innovating bioconvergence with the aim of benefiting patients in Abu Dhabi and globally.
Matthew Vander Heiden, MD, PhD, Director of MIT's Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research, expressed his enthusiasm for the collaboration and underlined the importance of interdisciplinary cooperation in addressing complex health challenges. He highlighted the potential for the partnership to connect MIT's research community with Abu Dhabi's growing healthcare innovation ecosystem, with a shared goal of improving patient outcomes through new opportunities in oncology, AI, and precision medicine.
Beyond research, the collaboration will focus on talent development and innovation at the intersection of AI and oncology. This includes offering physician-scientist fellowships, bilateral exchange programs, and joint learning opportunities to enhance healthcare professionals' capabilities in clinical oncology, artificial intelligence, and computational biology. Additionally, a bioconvergence incubator will be established to support high-potential startups, providing mentorship, expertise, and investment to accelerate the real-world application of scientific discoveries.
