Cunard's Queen Mary 2 Takes Centre Stage During America's 250th Anniversary Celebration in New York Harbour

Queen Mary 2 was among 46 tall ships from 20 nations that sailed into New York Harbour to mark 250 years of American Independence. The luxury cruise line Cunard featured its flagship vessel during the Sail4th 250 event, which served as a centerpiece for the United States' 250th Independence Day celebrations.

Anchored in a strategic location, Queen Mary 2 offered guests views of one of the most notable Fourth of July celebrations, showcasing the largest assembly of tall ships and naval vessels seen in New York City. The event attracted significant national attention, with live coverage from NBC's TODAY, where Jenna Bush Hager reported from the ship.

The day included the International Parade of Sail, featuring over 100 vessels, including 47 tall ships that sailed from the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge past the Statue of Liberty and up the Hudson River to the George Washington Bridge. An International Naval Review followed, highlighting a fleet of 37 U.S. and allied naval ships, which was recognized by a Navy vessel. The celebrations concluded with a military flypast by the U.S. Navy's Blue Angels, comprising over 150 aircraft, and a fireworks display illuminating the Manhattan skyline.

This occasion also held historical significance for Cunard, marking the anniversary of the company's first crossing on July 4, 1840, when RMS Britannia began the first regularly scheduled transatlantic steamship service between Liverpool and Boston. Since then, Cunard has maintained annual transatlantic crossings, solidifying its long-standing connection with the United States.

Katie McAlister, President of Cunard, emphasized the importance of Queen Mary 2's presence at Sail4th 250, stating that the event felt special as it registered the transatlantic story against the backdrop of New York. Chris O'Brien, President of Sail4th 250 New York, remarked that Queen Mary 2’s participation enriched the commemoration of American independence and created memorable experiences for young sailors and families.
