A New Approach to Treating Brain Cancer: HDT Bio Launches Canadian Clinical Program at McGill University
HDT Bio Canada Inc. has partnered with McGill University and The Neuro to initiate a Phase 1 clinical evaluation of HDT-401, an investigational RNA immune activator intended for glioblastoma treatment in Canada. Glioblastoma is a highly aggressive brain cancer with a poor prognosis, typically leading to death within 15 months of diagnosis. Despite extensive research over decades, there have been minimal improvements in treatment outcomes, and no approved immunotherapy has shown a survival benefit.
The establishment of HDT Bio Canada Inc., a subsidiary of HDT Bio Corp., aims to propel the company's cancer immunotherapy initiatives through clinical development and regulatory processes in Canada. Following the compassionate use of HDT-401 in glioblastoma patients, positive preliminary results informed the design of the upcoming formal clinical trial. The company has successfully held a pre-Clinical Trial Application meeting with Health Canada, garnering constructive feedback that aids in moving toward the formal submission necessary for trial initiation.
The Phase 1 study will involve collaboration with Dr. Roberto Diaz from The Neuro and other clinical specialists within McGill-affiliated institutions in Montreal. Dr. Diaz emphasizes the pressing need for innovative solutions in treating glioblastoma, noting the challenges presented by the tumor's ability to suppress local immune activity.
HDT-401 utilizes Riboxxim, a molecule licensed from Riboxx GmbH, alongside HDT Bio's proprietary LION™ nucleic acid delivery platform. It aims to stimulate immune responses directly at the tumor site, transforming the immune-suppressed environment of glioblastoma to support localized immune recognition and activity against the tumor. This strategy seeks to mitigate systemic exposure while maximizing therapeutic impact directly at the disease location.
In addition to glioblastoma, HDT Bio is advancing a breast cancer vaccine program in Canada, highlighting its commitment to developing cancer treatments within the country. This initiative includes collaboration with Northern RNA Inc. as its Canadian manufacturing partner, furthering efforts to enhance local biomanufacturing capacity for innovative treatment options.
