We've Spent Billions Listening to Employees. Why Aren't We Better At It?
HSD Metrics has raised questions about the effectiveness of the employee listening industry, suggesting that it has been addressing the wrong issues for over a century. The company notes that while employers have sought employee feedback since the early 1920s to decrease labor unrest and improve retention, the fundamental challenge of employee retention remains unresolved.
Despite significant advancements in technology, such as AI-driven analytics and cloud-based platforms, many organizations still struggle to retain full-time employees. The 2026 Talent Trends Report from the Society for Human Resource Management indicates that 42 percent of HR professionals report ongoing difficulties in this area. As the employee listening software market is projected to exceed $1 billion annually, HSD Metrics argues that the key issue lies not in collecting feedback but in enhancing the overall employee experience.
Dan Cahill, Managing Principal at HSD Metrics, emphasized the need to bridge the gap between data collection and tangible responses. He stated, "What it hasn't solved is the gap between the report and the response. That gap is where retention is won or lost." The company highlights that while organizations have improved tools for collecting feedback, the process of acting on that feedback remains fundamentally unchanged.
HSD Metrics advocates for a shift from traditional survey methods to a continuous feedback model that fosters ongoing conversations between employees and management. This approach is intended to build trust and resolve issues in real-time, rather than relying solely on annual surveys that may not capture immediate concerns.
With its Integrated Employee Experience Management (IEXM) framework, HSD Metrics aims to integrate survey design, data collection, analytics, and action plans into a cohesive system. Their solution, Metrics HQ, reportedly achieves higher response rates than traditional email surveys and focuses on ensuring that employee feedback translates into actionable outcomes.
