KU Medical Center Academic Leader Named Provost at Kansas City University

Kansas City University (KCU) and the University of Kansas Medical Center have announced the appointment of Abiodun E. Akinwuntan, PhD, MBA, MPH, MIH, as the provost and executive vice president for Academic, Research and Clinical Affairs at KCU. Akinwuntan, who currently serves as the dean and professor in the School of Health Professions at KU Medical Center, will begin his new role on August 31.

During his tenure at KU Medical Center since 2016, Akinwuntan has overseen significant advancements including a nearly 19-fold increase in external research funding, the launch of eight new academic programs and three interdisciplinary degree tracks, sustained enrollment growth for 11 consecutive years, and the securing of approximately $18 million in philanthropic support.

Marc B. Hahn, DO, president and CEO of KCU, expressed confidence in Akinwuntan's leadership capabilities. "Dr. Akinwuntan is an accomplished academic leader with a proven record of advancing academic excellence, growing research portfolios and developing innovative health professions programs," Hahn stated. He highlighted Akinwuntan's collaborative leadership style and strategic vision as assets to KCU's mission.

As provost and executive vice president, Akinwuntan will provide strategic leadership across KCU's colleges and campuses. His responsibilities will include overseeing strategic initiatives, enhancing the research enterprise, and fostering partnerships to strengthen the university's impact on healthcare education and community service.

Steven Stites, MD, executive vice chancellor at KU Medical Center, praised Akinwuntan's leadership and contributions. "His vision, integrity and commitment to excellence have transformed our School of Health Professions," Stites remarked, noting the lasting impact Akinwuntan has made. Prior to his role at KU Medical Center, Akinwuntan held various academic and leadership positions at Augusta University.
