Saber Astronautics releases new spacecraft constellation control and automation software SABER COMMANDER
Saber Astronautics has announced the launch of Saber Commander, a new software designed for spacecraft and constellation operations. The software builds on the operational legacy of the Predictive Ground station Interface (PIGI), which has been recognized in the space industry for its pioneering use of digital twin technology and machine learning to manage individual satellites. Saber Commander aims to support the increasingly complex needs of modern satellites, constellations, and mission requirements.
Originally developed in 2010 and released in 2012, PIGI was Saber's flagship operations software and a NASA Spinout. It was the first product worldwide to successfully utilize machine learning for spacecraft diagnostics, enabling operators to identify the root causes of health issues onboard spacecraft. PIGI was instrumental in advancing the visualization of satellite constellations and was also the first digital twin created with the Unity game engine to gain fielding authority from the US Space Force. This advancement led to the development of Saber's Space Battle Management System (SBMS), which functions as a protective tool for US Space Force Combat Command Deltas.
Dr. Jason Held, CEO of Saber Astronautics, highlighted the significance of PIGI in making satellite operations safer and more accessible. He noted that Saber Commander carries forward this legacy by incorporating new automation, visualization, and operational scalability suited to modern satellite constellations.
The development of Saber Commander involved close collaboration with the company’s satellite operators, utilizing insights gained from their Responsive Space Operations Centres (RSOC) in Australia and the United States. Currently, Saber manages 36 tonnes of spacecraft in orbit, which has provided valuable experience in addressing the challenges faced by mission teams.
Chris Schuck, Head of Product Engineering, emphasized that Saber Commander integrates lessons from previous products into a platform tailored for contemporary space operations. He acknowledged the need for a smarter approach due to larger fleets and congested orbits, stating that the software has been designed alongside operators to enhance automation, commanding, monitoring, and situational awareness within a unified platform.
