Mercantile Bank Corporation Announces Strong Second Quarter 2026 Results
Mercantile Bank Corporation reported a net income of $25.9 million, or $1.50 per diluted share, for the second quarter of 2026, an increase from $22.6 million, or $1.39 per diluted share, in the same quarter of 2025. For the first half of 2026, net income totaled $48.6 million, or $2.82 per diluted share, compared to $42.2 million, or $2.60 per diluted share, during the first half of 2025. When excluding non-recurring costs related to the acquisition of Eastern Michigan Financial Corporation and system conversions, adjusted net income was $26.4 million, or $1.53 per diluted share, for the second quarter of 2026 and $51.7 million, or $2.99 per diluted share, for the first six months of 2026.
Ray Reitsma, President and Chief Executive Officer of Mercantile, expressed satisfaction with the bank's performance amid ongoing economic uncertainties. He noted that the strong results were attributed to increased net interest income driven by commercial loan growth, a higher net interest margin, and reduced reliance on wholesale funds. Reitsma highlighted sustained strength in asset quality metrics and continued local deposit growth as key factors in funding earning asset growth.
Key highlights for the second quarter include a return on average assets of 1.5 percent and a return on average equity of 14.0 percent. The bank's tangible book value per common share rose to $38.42, representing a 9 percent annualized increase. Net revenue grew by nearly 13 percent compared to the prior year, with net interest income up almost 16 percent. The bank also reported significant increases in treasury management and payroll service fees of approximately 29 percent and 9 percent, respectively.
The bank's total assets were $6.82 billion as of June 30, 2026, reflecting a slight decrease from the end of the previous year, while total loans increased by nearly $99 million during the second quarter. Local deposits rose by $122 million during the first half of 2026, contributing to a decrease in the loan-to-deposit ratio from approximately 100 percent a year prior to 93 percent. Despite a reduction in brokered deposits, the bank's capital positions remained strong, with shareholders' equity totaling $755 million as of June 30, 2026.
