VetsinTech Launches ViT Vets in Space Huntsville to Connect Veterans to America's Aerospace and Defense Future
VetsinTech, a national nonprofit aimed at helping veterans transition into technology careers, has announced the launch of ViT Vets in Space Huntsville, expanding its Vets in Space initiative. Sponsored by Blue Origin and JPMorgan, this program is designed to create pathways for veterans and military spouses to enter careers in the aerospace, defense, and commercial space sectors, particularly in light of the U.S. Space Command headquarters moving to Redstone Arsenal.
The headquarters relocation will result in approximately 1,400 jobs shifting to Huntsville over the next five years. Currently, Redstone Arsenal supports a local workforce of over 45,000, which includes more than 24,000 civilian federal employees and 17,000 Army contractors. With veterans constituting 11.8% of Madison County's population—almost double the national average—the region's military community is well-positioned to integrate into the wider defense and space economy, facilitated by the ViT Vets in Space program.
As the global space economy is projected to reach $1.8 trillion by 2035, nearly tripling from $630 billion in 2023, the need for skilled labor in space-related fields is intensifying. Veterans, equipped with practical experience in high-pressure environments, advanced technologies, and critical mission planning, are positioned as valuable assets to this growing sector. The city of Huntsville, known for its missile defense and aerospace operations, aligns with the initiative’s goals.
ViT Vets in Space Huntsville focuses on two main areas: employment and entrepreneurship. It fosters workforce partnerships with leading companies, including Blue Origin and JPMorgan, to generate job opportunities for veterans and military spouses. The program also offers training, certifications, and educational resources tailored to meet industry demands. Additionally, it supports veteran-led startups through venture capital connections and entrepreneurial programming.
Katherine Webster, Founder and CEO of VetsinTech, emphasized the program's significance by stating, “Huntsville is one of the most important intersections of national security, space technology, and military talent in the country.” Nick Curry, Head of Military Programs at Blue Origin, also highlighted the importance of the initiative, noting that veterans possess skills essential for advancing space technology. More than 125 attendees participated in the launch event, which brought together veterans, corporate leaders, and government representatives to explore opportunities in the regional space economy.
