DRC National Football Team Cleared for 2026 FIFA World Cup
The Democratic Republic of Congo's national football federation (FECOFA) and FIFA have confirmed that the DRC's national team and technical staff are in full compliance with U.S. health and safety protocols related to the ongoing Ebola outbreak, allowing the team to participate in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
A videoconference between FECOFA President Veron Mosengo Omba, the federation's 4th Vice President, and senior FIFA representatives concluded that the Congolese delegation meets all health requirements imposed by American authorities. The meeting addressed concerns related to the Ebola epidemic and its potential impact on the DRC Leopards, staff, and supporters traveling to the United States.
Key measures discussed include the cancellation of the training camp originally scheduled in Kinshasa to comply with U.S. health entry requirements, as well as the fact that most DRC players selected for the World Cup squad live and compete in Europe, which limits any direct exposure risk. Additionally, team staff who departed Kinshasa on May 20 will complete a minimum 21-day stay in Europe before entering the United States, fully complying with American health authority guidelines.
Her Excellency Yvette Kapinga Ngandu, DRC Ambassador to the United States, praised the swift action by FECOFA and FIFA, stating, "The Leopards and its staff have demonstrated exactly the kind of responsibility, discipline, and respect that we expect from our athletes on the world stage." Minister of Sport Didier Budimbu reinforced the government's support for the delegation, emphasizing that the Leopards carry the pride of 100 million Congolese people.
The situation for Congolese supporters who purchased World Cup tickets but have been unable to secure U.S. visas was also addressed, with FIFA committing to review FECOFA's request to facilitate refunds for affected fans. The Ambassador expressed sympathy for these fans and called for FIFA to act urgently to make them whole.
This announcement occurs amidst ongoing efforts to deepen bilateral relations between the DRC and the United States across various fronts. The 2026 World Cup is expected to be a significant cultural, sporting, and diplomatic event for both nations, with the DRC Embassy in Washington committed to supporting the Congolese team, staff, and fans throughout the tournament.
