A New Era Begins: Cal Poly Unveils the John Madden Football Center
Cal Poly Athletics has inaugurated the John Madden Football Center, a $45 million facility aimed at enhancing the football program. The unveiling took place on June 6, 2026, and was attended by alumni, donors, supporters, student-athletes, and members of the Madden family.
The center is named after Cal Poly alumnus and Pro Football Hall of Fame coach John Madden, reflecting the values of preparation, teamwork, leadership, and opportunity that characterized his life and career. Designed to improve the student-athlete experience, the center will serve as a comprehensive headquarters for training, recovery, nutrition, team development, and program operations.
Director of Athletics Carter Henderson stated, "This facility represents far more than bricks and mortar — it represents our commitment to excellence and the future of Cal Poly Football." He emphasized that the center will provide student-athletes with necessary resources to compete at the highest level while honoring Madden's legacy.
University President Jeffrey D. Armstrong noted Madden's personal experience as a student-athlete, which influenced his commitment to players and drive for excellence. "We're incredibly grateful to him, the entire Madden family, and the many supporters who made this new home for Mustang football possible," Armstrong said.
The facility, designed by global design firm Populous and constructed by Hensel Phelps, includes a 37,690-square-foot football operations building and features the O'Neill Family Legends Lobby that overlooks Mustang Memorial Plaza. This area celebrates Madden's legacy, housing a statue of him alongside various memorabilia and interactive video displays.
Head Coach Tim Skipper remarked on the impact of the new center, stating, "Our student-athletes now have a home built specifically for them, where they can develop as players, students, and leaders." Cal Poly Football competes in the Big Sky Conference and will start its 2026 home season on August 28 against Idaho, featuring a John Madden Day celebration at Mustang Memorial Field. The game is set for 7 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN.
