As the Lights Fade, Vivid Sydney 2026 Leaves the City Glowing

Sydney's Vivid Sydney festival concluded on June 13, 2026, after 23 nights featuring a variety of sights, events, and experiences, solidifying its status as the world's largest comprehensive arts festival. The event returned to its roots by curating and collaborating with both established and emerging Australian talent alongside international creators and artists.

The festival included over 200 events spread across five connected zones: Circular Quay & The Rocks, Barangaroo, Darling Harbour, and the Inner City. More than 80% of the events were free, with the entire Vivid Light Walk accessible to the public.

Vivid Sydney highlighted a remarkable array of international talent, with 41 international acts making their Australian debut, including performances by Saint Levant and a discussion featuring Academy Award-winning director Chloé Zhao. Other notable figures included Academy Award-winning director Sean Baker, Pulitzer Prize-winning author Jerry Saltz, New York Times-bestselling author Roxane Gay, and Grammy nominee Zane Lowe. Yotam Ottolenghi led the Regional Dinner Series, while internationally recognized artists transformed Sydney's landmarks with installations such as Yann Nguema's Opera Mundi at the Opera House and Chris Levine's Molecule of Light near the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Brett Sheehy AO, Festival Director, remarked on the success of this year's event, noting it exceeded expectations in both audience engagement and the quality of the program. Visitors on average attended 4.5 locations and spent around three hours at the festival per visit. He highlighted the positive reception of new initiatives, which included aerial performances, expanded Fire Kitchen elements, and larger-scale displays across the festival's four pillars: light, music, minds, and food.

Major partners for Vivid Sydney 2026 included Kia, Samsung Electronics Australia, and IREN, with Kia marking its fifth consecutive year of partnership. Samsung contributed with the immersive Sky Portal Studio installation. Lilly Australia celebrated its 150th anniversary as an Official Partner, featuring a Vivid Minds panel, and Uber provided dedicated pick-up and drop-off zones throughout the festival. The 2026 Charity Partner was Foodbank NSW & ACT, which showcased its interactive Foodbank Truck Packer installation at Tumbalong Park.
