Concept Study Identifies Potential Refining Pathway at Shaakichiuwaanaan to Battery-Grade Lithium Carbonate
A recent study has indicated the potential for PMET Resources Inc. to produce a value-added lithium chemical at its 100%-owned Shaakichiuwaanaan Project in Quebec. The findings suggest opportunities to enhance logistics efficiency and support Canada's and Québec's goals for domestic processing of critical minerals.
The concept study evaluated seven processing flowsheet options for converting spodumene concentrate into lithium products. The study identified Primero's ALi® atmospheric leach process as the optimal pathway due to its economic potential, logistics efficiency, and alignment with sustainability objectives. Bench-scale tests conducted on spodumene concentrate samples yielded a purity of 99.8% Li₂CO₃, a battery-grade lithium carbonate.
With the integration of electric calcination technology using Québec's renewable energy, on-site processing could significantly reduce carbon intensity and improve efficiencies in the battery materials supply chain. The strategy focuses on advancing the project as a staged growth opportunity, rather than as a requirement for the current proposed development outlined in the 2025 Feasibility Study.
Frederic Mercier-Langevin, Chief Operations/Development Officer at PMET, emphasized the project's Tier-1 status and potential for capturing additional value beyond the base spodumene project. He noted that logistics savings from on-site processing could be substantial and urged the need for further test work to explore these opportunities.
Ken Brinsden, President and CEO of PMET, commented on the study's implications for redefining the lithium supply chain, highlighting the efficiency of refining lithium at the mine site rather than overseas. The project’s feasibility and strategic advantages, including proximity to low-cost renewable hydroelectric power, position it as a significant player in North America’s critical mineral landscape.
