LOTTE Biologics Completes Construction of Songdo Bio Campus Plant 1 and Obtains Approval for Use

LOTTE Biologics has completed major construction and obtained approval for use of Plant 1 at its Songdo Bio Campus in Incheon, South Korea. This milestone was reached approximately two years after the commencement of construction in 2024, marking a notably swift execution timeline for global biologics manufacturing facility projects.

The approval confirms that the physical construction of the facility has been finalized, including site development, building and civil engineering works, production equipment, piping, electrical systems, and control systems. Constructing biologics manufacturing facilities requires advanced design and engineering capabilities, along with systematic quality management, to support complex cell culture processes while adhering to global cGMP standards.

LOTTE Biologics drew on operational experience and manufacturing insights from its Syracuse Bio Campus when building Songdo Plant 1. An automated Manufacturing Control System (MCS) was implemented from the design stage to enhance production efficiency and quality. The facility is designed to optimize support for customers during future commercial manufacturing.

Songdo Plant 1 is a 120,000-liter antibody manufacturing facility, featuring eight 15,000-liter stainless-steel bioreactors to accommodate large-scale commercial production. The facility incorporates advanced bioprocessing technologies, including higher-titer cell culture and perfusion processes, along with an automated warehouse and real-time monitoring systems to enhance manufacturing stability and operational efficiency.

Utilizing a dual-site strategy linking the Songdo Bio Campus with the Syracuse Bio Campus in New York, LOTTE Biologics is positioned to offer integrated CDMO services connecting early-stage clinical production with large-scale commercial manufacturing. The Syracuse Bio Campus will support early-stage projects and clinical supply, while Songdo Plant 1 will serve as the company's large-scale manufacturing base, enabling flexible responses to diverse customer needs.

LOTTE Biologics plans to commence full-scale commissioning and production system validation in the latter half of this year, aiming for GMP manufacturing readiness to support global customer demand. The company also seeks to enhance production efficiency and quality through data-driven operations and advanced digital systems. James Park, CEO of LOTTE Biologics, stated that the completion of construction and approval for Songdo Plant 1 is a testament to the capabilities and dedication of its employees, along with strategic support from the LOTTE Group.
