From the Lab to the Grid: General Fusion Signs a Framework to Bring Fusion Power to Italy
General Fusion Inc. has announced a milestone-based framework agreement with Italian renewable-energy company Renexia, aimed at the siting, development, and construction of commercial Magnetized Target Fusion (MTF) power plants in Italy. This announcement comes shortly after the company reported a significant plasma-heating achievement.
The agreement delineates a multi-phase approach that includes site evaluation and selection, identification of commercial opportunities, offtake agreements, permitting, and the eventual construction of one or more MTF power plants. Work on site feasibility is expected to commence immediately, with a definitive agreement for the first phase currently in negotiations.
General Fusion's CEO Greg Twinney expressed that this agreement is a step toward exporting their fusion energy technology to global markets, highlighting Renexia's established role on the company's Market Development Advisory Committee as beneficial for navigating the energy sector. Renexia's CEO Riccardo Toto emphasized the potential of MTF technology to provide economical clean power, especially as Italy faces rising energy costs.
The partnership with Renexia targets Italy, which has some of the highest electricity prices in Europe, making the introduction of economically viable, carbon-free power particularly attractive. The collaboration aligns with Italy’s energy transition goals and General Fusion's intention to promote practical fusion solutions while avoiding the complexities associated with superconducting magnets and high-powered lasers.
As General Fusion prepares for a public offering through a merger with Spring Valley Acquisition Corp. III, a shareholder vote is scheduled for July 6, 2026. This development could represent an important milestone for the deployment of fusion energy technology in Italy and globally.
