Bulgaria's Information Services and Google Cloud Launch AI-Powered National Cybershield

May 20, 2026

Bulgaria's Information Services, the national system integrator of Bulgaria, has announced a strategic collaboration with Google Cloud aimed at enhancing the country's national cyber defense capabilities. This partnership is noted as one of the first implementations of Google Cloud's Cybershield in Europe, positioning Bulgaria as a leader in centralized, AI-powered national security.

In response to the rapidly evolving cyber threat landscape, Bulgaria's National Cyber Defense Strategy seeks to implement a federated Security Operations Center (SOC) to safeguard multiple government ministries and agencies. Information Services will utilize Google Cloud Security Operations to provide centralized awareness of threats, enabling a coordinated and swift response across government entities.

The collaboration incorporates Google Cloud's secure infrastructure and AI-driven threat intelligence, creating a comprehensive defensive strategy to detect and mitigate sophisticated cyber threats. By integrating Mandiant's frontline insights with advanced technology, the Bulgarian government aims to enhance its security operations and protect critical national assets and citizens.

Simeon Kartselyanski, Cyber Security Manager at Information Services, emphasized the depth of the partnership, stating, "Our partnership with Google Cloud is the result of an eight-year relationship built on trust and technical excellence." He highlighted that this initiative not only strengthens Bulgaria's defenses but serves as a model for other EU nations describing the importance of centralized capabilities to counter persistent threats.

The implementation process, which commenced earlier this year, plans to onboard 54 government entities into the federated SOC. This comprehensive project integrates various Google Cloud security solutions, enhancing local expertise through specialized analyst capabilities to support Information Services in identifying and addressing complex intrusion scenarios.

Supported by EU funding, the project reflects a broader initiative to secure the eastern border of the EU. By consolidating security telemetry and intelligence, Bulgaria aims to decrease the mean time to detect and respond to cyber threats, transitioning from a reactive to a proactive defense strategy. Boris Georgiev, Director for Central and Eastern Europe at Google Cloud, remarked that Bulgaria’s approach to cybersecurity represents a significant advancement in automated defense strategies against AI-driven threats.
