University of Utah and U.S. Army Reserve complete historic land transfer and relocation

After more than 100 years of collaboration, the University of Utah and the U.S. Army Reserve (USAR) have completed a significant transition of more than 1,500 acres of federal land into spaces designated for teaching, research, and healthcare. This historic partnership was marked by a celebration on August 8, 2026, attended by military, state, and federal leaders, as well as representatives from higher education.

The transition coincides with the relocation of military units to a new $127 million, 227,000-square-foot headquarters for the Army Reserve at Camp Williams. This move not only facilitates the closure of the fort at Fort Douglas but also signifies the completion of a land transfer historically unique to the United States. Fort Douglas was initially established to monitor pioneer activities in Salt Lake City and has since contributed to the cultural and recreational landscape of the community while serving as the foundation for Utah's flagship research university.

"The story of Fort Douglas has always been a story of service," said Taylor Randall, president of the University of Utah. He emphasized the importance of the partnership and expressed gratitude toward the Army Reserve, Utah National Guard, and local leaders for their collective efforts. The complex transfer process required approval from both the Utah State Legislature and Congress, leading to the construction of the new Army Reserve Center, ultimately enabling the military to vacate additional land east of the university.

Utah Governor Spencer Cox commented on the move, describing it as a substantial modernization effort that would enhance soldier readiness and training capabilities. The new U.S. Army Reserve Center in Bluffdale, which opened in June, marks the successful transition of Army Reserve units from Fort Douglas to a modern location positioned 30 miles to the southwest.
