NIFS Launches Nationwide "Move Your Mood" Initiative to Promote Mental Wellness Through Movement
The National Institute for Fitness and Sport (NIFS) is launching Move Your Mood, a nationwide event aimed at encouraging older adults to enhance their mental well-being through movement. The initiative will take place on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, during Mental Health Awareness Week, inviting senior living communities across the United States to participate.
Move Your Mood aims to promote the connection between physical activity and mental health, with the goal of achieving 5,000 workouts in a single day. Research indicates that regular physical activity can improve mood, lessen symptoms of anxiety and depression, support better sleep, and foster social connections. With the rising mental health needs of older adults, NIFS established this initiative to empower senior living communities to utilize movement as a tool for enhancing residents' overall well-being.
The initiative was inspired by a survey of senior living health and wellness professionals conducted by NIFS, which revealed that 50% have observed an uptick in residents facing mental health challenges such as anxiety and depression. Additionally, 55% of respondents anticipate an ongoing increase in the demand for mental health resources.
Unlike typical awareness campaigns, Move Your Mood merges education with physical activity. Participating communities will set their own records for one-day workouts, contributing toward the national goal of 5,000 workouts. Throughout the day, residents will receive insights on how movement can boost mood, alleviate stress, support brain health, enhance sleep, and strengthen social ties.
NIFS President Emily Davenport stated, "We know that fitness centers in senior living communities help residents move more every day and they love a good challenge and education! Move Your Mood combines exercise, hands-on learning, and a healthy competition to highlight how these spaces can improve not just physical function in seniors, but overall mental health."
Senior living communities nationwide are encouraged to participate in this free event and assist NIFS in reaching its objective of 5,000 resident workouts in one day. Interested parties can learn more and register on the Move Your Mood event page.
