CATL and Quinbrook Build on Supernode Partnership Following Stage 2 and Stage 3 Major Milestones

Quinbrook's Supernode battery energy storage project has achieved Stage 2 commercial operation and secured A$469 million in financing for Stage 3, furthering the phased development of what is set to be Australia's largest operational battery energy storage system (BESS) campus. The facility, with planned capacity expected to exceed 3 GWh, is supported by CATL as the core energy storage system supplier for all three stages.

Located at Brendale, north of Brisbane, Supernode is adjacent to the South Pine substation, a pivotal hub in Queensland's power system. This strategic location offers a favorable marginal loss factors (MLFs) position and around 4,000MW of available connection capacity for future expansion, aligning with Queensland's advancing energy transition and infrastructure investment cycle.

Stage 3's financial close brings the total project financing for Stages 1, 2, and 3 to approximately A$1.2 billion. The combined capacity across these stages is anticipated to be 780MW / 3,074MWh, with all capacity contracted under long-term offtake agreements. The operational efficiency and reliability of the energy storage systems are vital for the long-term value of the assets, with CATL supplying EnerC Plus systems for Stages 1 and 2 and TENER S systems for Stage 3.

Tim Hornemand, Managing Director and Regional Lead, Australia, at Quinbrook, expressed pride in successfully delivering both Origin-contracted stages on schedule. With Stage 3 now fully financed, Hornemand noted it as another significant milestone for Supernode. Meanwhile, Tan Libin, CCO and Co-President of Sales & Marketing at CATL, emphasized the evolution of energy storage into a strategic asset, highlighting the importance of collaboration and innovation in realizing long-term value.

Quinbrook and CATL are also collaborating on EnerQB, an eight-hour battery storage solution planned for future phases of the Supernode development. This initiative underscores CATL's role as the energy storage system supplier across the initial stages, with the company continuing efforts to deliver reliable technologies and lifecycle support worldwide.
