Grand Opening of $750M CANXPORT Logistics Hub a Triumph for Canadian Trade
Ray-Mont Logistics, Canadian National Railway (CN), and the Prince Rupert Port Authority (PRPA) announced the grand opening of CANXPORT, a $750 million export logistics facility at the Port of Prince Rupert. The facility aims to enhance market access for Canadian exporters and supports thousands of jobs across the country.
CANXPORT, operated by Ray-Mont Logistics based in Montreal, is designed to facilitate rail-to-container transloading of various export products, including those from the petrochemical, forestry, agriculture, and mining sectors.
CN's involvement includes investments to expand the Zanardi Rapids Bridge and enhance the rail corridor capacity, thereby strengthening the intermodal ecosystem at the port.
The development of CANXPORT has significant Indigenous participation, with the primary contract awarded to an Indigenous joint venture that includes the Metlakatla First Nation, Lax Kw'alaams Band, Gitxaala Nation, and IDL Projects Inc. Metlakatla and Lax Kw'alaams are majority owners of Gat Leedm Logistics, which provides truck drayage services at the port.
The project received financial backing from a $150 million loan from the Canada Infrastructure Bank, marking its first investment in a port project, along with nearly $50 million from Transport Canada's National Trade Corridors Fund and $25 million from the Province's Stronger BC program. The Port of Prince Rupert, being North America's closest West Coast port to Asia, is positioned to support Canada's trade diversification strategy.
CANXPORT is expected to contribute up to 400,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) of transloading capacity annually, with the potential to increase this capacity to 750,000 TEUs. The Port of Prince Rupert currently supports approximately 7,940 full-time jobs across British Columbia, contributing $1.5 billion to Canada's GDP and handling exports valued at $8.1 billion in recent years.
