RBC to mobilize $1.4 billion to back Canada's next global technology champions and advance nation-building efforts
RBC has announced a $1.4 billion (US$1 billion) initiative to invest in Canadian technology firms with significant growth potential, introducing the RBCx Growth Fund I ahead of the Canada Investment Summit. The fund will primarily seek direct equity investments in Canadian companies that RBC believes it can help accelerate.
The organization plans to invest up to $416 million (US$300 million) into these companies, providing access to commercialization opportunities, strategic partnerships, and support for expansion that may not typically be available from traditional investors. The fund targets sectors where Canada holds inherent strengths, such as energy, agriculture, artificial intelligence, healthcare, and frontier technologies, combining these with the country's research and development capabilities.
RBC President and CEO Dave McKay emphasized the goal of retaining more Canadian companies as they scale, stating, "Our ambition is simple: a future where more of the world's next great companies build in Canada and stay in Canada." He noted the challenge faced by Canadian entrepreneurs who often seek opportunities abroad when ready to expand.
Leading the growth fund will be Sid Paquette, head of RBCx, which focuses on aiding startups and scalable businesses. Initial discussions have generated significant interest from investors keen on Canada's innovation landscape and reinforcing the country’s reputation as a favorable long-term investment destination.
Historically, Canada has lagged behind the U.S. in late-stage investment leadership, with only 33 percent of growth rounds in Canada led by domestic investors compared to 74 percent in the U.S. The RBCx Growth Fund I aims to address this discrepancy and foster a more robust ecosystem where Canadian companies can thrive without taking their operations elsewhere.
