SAP SE and Cyberwave have announced the successful deployment of fully autonomous robots equipped with artificial intelligence at a functioning SAP logistics warehouse. This development signifies a significant milestone, as SAP begins to implement advanced robotics within its own facilities.

The implementation at SAP's warehouse in St. Leon-Rot, Germany, which operates with SAP Logistics Management (LGM), illustrates that physical AI is no longer merely a research concept. The robots are capable of performing box folding, packing, and shipping preparation tasks autonomously, demonstrating measurable improvements in operational performance.

The agile, API-centric architecture of SAP LGM provides an ideal foundation for robotic automation. Tasks are translated into precise commands for the robots using the SAP Embodied AI service, allowing for complete integration through the SAP Business Technology Platform (BTP) and Cyberwave's platform within minutes. Tim Kuebler, SAP's Warehouse and Shipping Director, stated that integrating robotics with AI directly into warehouse operations showcases the tangible value of physical AI, marking a decisive step toward more resilient and efficient logistics operations.

Logistics environments are among the most challenging for robotics due to the need to handle diverse and irregularly-shaped objects, perform consistent packing and labeling tasks, and process shipping orders under constantly changing conditions. Traditional robotic systems often require laborious manual programming for each variation of task, which can lead to failures when real-world conditions shift.

Cyberwave has developed a platform specifically designed to address these challenges comprehensively. This allows operators to quickly gather training data through intuitive demonstration interfaces, adjusting Vision-Language-Action (VLA) and Reinforcement Learning (RL) models based on that data. Consequently, the robots can generalize across various objects, orientations, and workflow variations, executing tasks that would previously require extensive engineering. Simone Di Somma, co-founder and CEO of Cyberwave, emphasized that this partnership with SAP marks a transformative moment in logistics robotics.

The robots deployed at the SAP warehouse in St. Leon-Rot now operate fully autonomously, performing tasks such as box folding and packing while allowing human workers to focus on less repetitive and physically demanding tasks, thereby increasing warehouse productivity. The entire integration process, from training the robots to operational deployment, utilized SAP BTP and Cyberwave's platform, with SAP continuing to advance its integrated AI capabilities to optimize its operations.
