YAS ISLAND TO BE HOME OF SPHERE ABU DHABI, A NEW GLOBAL ICON FOR IMMERSIVE ENTERTAINMENT

The Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) and Sphere Entertainment Co. have announced the construction of Sphere Abu Dhabi on Yas Island, a project with a budget of USD 1.7 billion. Completion of the construction phase is anticipated by the end of 2029. The venue, which will have a capacity of up to 20,000, aims to host immersive experiences, concert residencies, sporting events, and brand events.

The Sphere Abu Dhabi will be the first venue of its kind outside the United States, located between Yas Mall and SeaWorld Abu Dhabi, surrounded by greenery and in proximity to other Yas Island attractions. The venue is designed to serve as a significant draw for tourists and is expected to reinforce Abu Dhabi's position as a global destination.

HE Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of DCT Abu Dhabi, emphasized the project's long-term vision, stating, "Abu Dhabi has always built for the long term, and Sphere Abu Dhabi is a powerful demonstration of that commitment." He noted the investment as a signal of Abu Dhabi's ambition and commitment to showcasing Emirati culture and talent.

James L. Dolan, Executive Chairman and CEO of Sphere Entertainment, expressed excitement about establishing Sphere in Abu Dhabi, calling it a natural home given the emirate's infrastructure and cultural significance. The venue will feature advanced experiential technologies and will offer various event configurations for diverse activities including concerts and conferences, with plans to exhibit Emirati art and storytelling.

Located near Zayed International Airport, Sphere Abu Dhabi will contribute to the region's tourism landscape, complementing other significant developments like the Saadiyat Cultural District and the upcoming Disney theme park resort on Yas Island. The project aims to create numerous local jobs and is expected to enhance the emirate's hospitality and entertainment sectors.
