Malwarebytes Launches Free Reverse Phone Check to Help Consumers Identify Potential Scam Numbers
Malwarebytes has launched a new tool called Malwarebytes Scam Number Check, designed to help consumers quickly assess whether a phone number may be associated with scam activity. This free, standalone web experience enables users to perform a reverse lookup of phone numbers without needing to sign in. The tool provides crucial community context by alerting users if other individuals have reported scam activity from the number in question, and it allows users to report suspicious numbers based on their experiences, offering insights into the nature of the communication, whether it be robocalls, fraud, or delivery scams.
According to the latest Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) report, scammers stole over $21 billion from Americans last year. Data from Malwarebytes Scam Guard indicates that phone-call-assisted social engineering scams rank among the top five types of fraud, with many scams initiated through seemingly legitimate phone calls or texts that have been spoofed for malicious intent. The Scam Number Check tool leverages Malwarebytes’ threat intelligence engine, which analyzes carrier data, contextual signals, and known scam indicators from its extensive database to provide relevant insights and empower users to make informed decisions.
