Star Princess Sets Sail with Sustainable Food Waste Solution from Power Knot Ocean
Power Knot Ocean has announced the deployment of 26 of its machines aboard Princess Cruises' newest luxury cruise ship, the Star Princess. This integration of Power Knot's LFC biodigesters and WEP effluent pumps represents a significant advancement in sustainable waste management practices within the cruise industry.
The Star Princess is one of the largest and most innovative vessels in the Princess Cruises fleet. As the second Sphere-class ship, it weighs 177,882 gross tons and can accommodate up to 4,300 guests. Powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG), the ship features the commissioned products, which allow for sustainable food waste management from her inaugural voyage. Star Princess is set to serve destinations including the Caribbean and Alaska.
Power Knot's LFC biodigester employs natural aerobic digestion to convert food waste into water, reducing reliance on traditional disposal methods and lowering costs and environmental impact. The biodigester units are strategically positioned in areas such as galleys and garbage rooms, improving waste processing operations. With capacities ranging from 10 kg (22 lb) to 6,000 kg (13,200 lb) of food waste per day, the LFC biodigester offers a versatile approach to waste reduction.
