American EV Jobs Alliance Applauds Governor Newsom, Legislature for Landmark First-Time EV Buyer Incentive
A $135 million investment from the state of California, matched dollar-for-dollar by automakers, is expected to deliver over $270 million in point-of-sale savings for first-time electric vehicle buyers. This initiative was announced as part of the state budget agreement, according to the American EV Jobs Alliance.
The agreement requires the California Air Resources Board (CARB) to establish a new incentive program aimed at first-time EV buyers. The program will involve grant agreements with participating automakers who are required to match the state incentive dollar-for-dollar. This collaboration effectively doubles the investment available to support Californians purchasing their first electric vehicles.
The American EV Jobs Alliance has played a significant role in designing the program and garnering support over the past year. Their efforts included a campaign to encourage lawmakers to fund the initiative, featuring various outreach strategies such as a dedicated website, a constituent texting program, lobby days, and op-eds promoting the economic benefits of California's leadership in electric vehicles.
Mike Murphy, CEO of the American EV Jobs Alliance, commended Governor Gavin Newsom and the California Legislature for their efforts, highlighting that the funding will provide a $3,500 cash incentive for thousands of first-time EV buyers. The program aims to deliver these incentives at the point of sale, simplifying the purchasing process for new and used electric vehicles registered in California. With a focus on first-time buyers and no income cap, the initiative is designed to assist working families.
The partnership with automakers is notably among the first of its kind in the nation, aimed at attracting industry investment alongside public funding. With federal support for EV manufacturing declining, California's proactive approach aims to maintain competitiveness in the market and protect U.S. jobs in the electric vehicle sector.
As CARB moves forward to finalize grant agreements with participating automakers, the American EV Jobs Alliance expressed gratitude to the Governor and legislative leaders for their support and emphasized its commitment to collaborating with various stakeholders to ensure the program's swift implementation.
